This Is My Mother

This is my mother

A woman whose words breathe inspiration

A woman whose love knows no bounds

A woman who does not know the words “give up”

This is my mother

A woman whose salt and pepper hair shouldn’t be mistaken for softness

She may be sweet and thoughtful, loyal and graceful

But she’ll cut you, clean the streets with you

Walk you back to the lane you thought you could escape from

This is my mother

The woman who held a tired young adult in her arms because every guy she found herself falling for, just wanted her for her body

The woman whose constant prayers for you never leave her silently beating heart

The woman who taught me to fight to stay close to God above all else

This is my mother

The Ruth of women

Your people are her people

Your God is her God

And she taught her daughter to be the same

She’s the Esther of women

And she’s never so far where you can’t turn around and reach her

This is my mother

She adopts my friends as though they were her own

She looks out for them and “lectures“ them as though they were me

She has sons and daughters that she never birthed through blood but she gained in spirit

This is my mother

A woman who stands in the gap

Sacrifices and keeps on sacrificing

The female version of Gideon

She’s a woman who fights for you even when you can’t fight for yourself

She’s the Aaron to your Moses

And the Nathan to your David

This is my mother

The momma who doesn’t like you after you’ve screwed up

And she likes everyone

The momma who taught me to never give up

And to fight for what’s mine

The momma who taught me to “never let anyone disrespect me no matter who they are”

This is my mother

She may not have birthed me

But there’s a difference between giving birth and giving life

We don’t always see eye to eye

But she gave me the space to be me

This is my mother

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
